CROSSED: FALL 2018

SHE/HER/HERS

I am inspired by my cross country and track team. Since we compete in both track and cross country we only get about four weeks off a year at most, and the coaches and other staff get even less than that. During the school year we have practice 6 days a week, sometimes twice a day, and yet everyone puts in the work at every practice to make themselves better. With our busy schedules it can be hard to keep ourselves accountable in school. Sometimes our team spends more time traveling for meets than being at home, but we still have so many girls that are able to have 4.0 GPAs. Our team is also very involved in the community through different service projects like volunteering at elementary school field days (pre-covid). Everyday I am inspired by the hard work and dedication put into our team by our coaches, athletes, and everyone involved in student athlete development. At the end of the day I know I can always turn to my team for support or guidance no matter what.

Someone that inspires me with their approach to life is my big, Kristina Lingao. Everyday, she constantly works hard at what she does whether it be working out, making sure to check up on me, or managing her businesses (yes, businesses, as in not just one but multiple). The thing that inspires me most about her is that she always has a positive outlook on life and tackles challenges flawlessly. She truly sets an example for me and makes sure that I know anything is achievable.

Someone that inspires me is my fam, Melissa Gasmen. She’s always very supportive to me and my chapter. She always takes the time to talk to me and help me out whenever I need it. How she inspires me is by how hardcore of a sister she is. I’m always inspired by her dedication in aKDPhi even when her life gets busy. I truly admire everything that she does in our organization and I am blessed to be part of her family line. She truly made an impact on me ever since I met her for the first time. I hope to live up to the legacy that she continues to lead in aKDPhi.

Someone that always inspires me is my mom. She has experienced so many hardships in life and I admire her for never giving up and being able to provide for my brother and I. From immigrating to a country where she knew no one and bringing her two children along with her to getting a college degree in her late 40s. She is my prime example that it is never too late to do what you want and it inspires me to never give up.

I am greatly inspired by my friends. My friends’ ages range all over the place so it is always interesting to see everyone navigating the different paths of their lives. For example, to my friends who are older than me, it is always inspiring to see them work towards finishing off college and finding their career or starting their new lives outside of undergrad. Seeing that progress is something that I admire because I aspire to be like them and push through and be successful. I am also motivated by them because they are always encouraging me to do my best and I am forever grateful for them always having my back and always wanting the best for me.

CROSSED: SPRING 2020

SHE/HER/HERS

Someone who has inspired me is my Army ROTC instructor Major Smith. He always puts his people first and constantly empowers the strengths of the individual in order to perform the best for the team. Especially in the military, I’ve always had a slight stigma that it was this intense cut-throat world, which it can be, but he has demonstrated that it's a people’s business where we can only lead with the relationships we build with others. Last but not least, his advocacy for mental health is something I respect him the most about. He’s shown that before you can secure your soldiers, you must secure your person, both in mind and in body, as it is proven that healthy leadership can only come from a healthy human.

SHE/HER/HERS

Someone who inspires me is my mom. She has always been a hard worker and always perseveres when the going gets tough. I admire how much she has grown whether from the challenge of being a single mother or going back to school. She has looked out for her family and puts them first. I appreciate that she has never pressured me to stick to something I didn’t enjoy and how she has always supported me. I’ve always been attached at the hip to her cause I’m a momma’s girl. So, I wouldn’t want anyone else to have gotten me from China besides her.

SHE/HER/HERS

Someone who inspires me is my mom. I admire her for her strength, compassion and dedication. Growing up as a kid, my mom was a single mother who always put the needs of my sister and I before herself. Although life has thrown her many challenges, she has handled each with grace and poise. My mom is truly my hero and I don’t know what I would do without her.

Someone who inspires me is my robotics mentor from high school. Even though he is quite young, he taught me many things while I was in high school. Whenever, I was under any stress he would say things that would help me calm down or even guide me to help me with situations. His outlook in life inspires me to live a more carefree and less stressful life.

SHE/HER/HERS

Someone who inspires is my father. We are definitely different people: whereas he is hardworking and stern, I am definitely more reserved and empathetic. Despite our differences, however, he has taught me a lot of important life lessons and inspires me everyday. For example, he helped inspire my love of food which has had a strong influence on what I want to do in my future career in hospitality. Furthermore, he has always been my voice of reason, someone I can go to when I need to hear things from a different or straightforward perspective. His drive, dedication to his family, and intelligence are what I admire the most about him. My father is one of the most important people in my life, and he has been one of the biggest influences on who I am today.

CROSSED: SPRING 2020

SHE/HER/HERS

Someone who inspires me is my dad! He was pretty much a rebel growing up, but he matured and chose to leave his home country of the Philippines to give his family a better future. He has also been super supportive in everything that I do and have done throughout my entire life. I want to be able to take care of those that I love as much as he did for my mom, my sister, and me.

CROSSED: SPRING 2020

SHE/HER/HERS

Although it sounds cheesy, my mom’s optimism is what inspires me. She wakes up every morning with gratitude, and she’s been nothing but a positive force in my life. As a single mother, she’s made selfless sacrifices by always putting the needs of my sister and I before hers. Always having a positive perspective isn’t the easiest, but her habits and choices make it tangible. Her intrinsic motivation and dedication gives me hope for a successful future.

CROSSED: SPRING 2020

SHE/HER/HERS

Someone who inspires me by the way they approach life is my mom. Growing up, she always emphasized to me how important education is and followed through on her word when she decided to go back to school to get her Master’s Degree many years after working as a radiation therapist. I admire the way she has the ambition and drive to work her way up the ladder in her career. She’s taught me that the grind and goals never stops as you grow up, and that it’s never too late to change your mind.

SHE/HER/HERS

Someone who has always inspired me is my mom. I love the light that she has inside because it’s something that draws people to her and adds some light to their life. No matter the situation, she could always find a way to overcome struggles and create solutions to problems. Growing up in an underprivileged neighborhood in Trinidad, she strived for a better life and used every opportunity she could get to better herself and her future. Now, she works as an OBGYN and a  representative of Trinidad in the World Health Organization and has made her dreams come true. She is resilient and fights for what she believes in and I hope to do the same, no matter the adversity I face.
